China’s import and export of household paper and sanitary products in the first three quarters of 2022

According to customs statistics, in the first three quarters of 2022, the import and export volume of China’s household paper showed an opposite trend compared with the same period last year, with the import volume significantly reduced and the export volume significantly increased. After big fluctuations in 2020 and 2021, the import business of household paper gradually recovered to the level of the same period in 2019. The import and export trend of absorbent sanitary products kept the same pace with the same period of last year, and the import volume further decreased, while the export business maintained the trend of growth. The import and export business of wet wipes decreased significantly year-on-year, mainly due to the decrease of foreign trade volume of disinfection wipes. The specific import and export analysis of various products is as follows:
Household paperimportIn the first three quarters of 2022, both the import volume and value of household paper decreased significantly, with the import volume dropping to about 24,300 tons, of which base paper accounted for 83.4%.exit. Both the volume and value of household paper increased significantly in the first three quarters of 2022, reversing the trend of decline in the same period of 2021, but still falling short of the volume of household paper exports in the first three quarters of 2020 (about 676,200 tons). The largest increase in export volume was base paper, but the export of household paper was still dominated by processed products, accounting for 76.7%. In addition, the export price of finished paper kept rising, and the export structure of household paper continued to develop towards high-end.
Sanitary products
Import, In the first three quarters of 2022, the import volume of absorbent sanitary products was 53,600 t, down 29.53 percent compared with the same period in 2021. The import volume of baby diapers, which accounted for the largest proportion, was about 39,900 t, down 35.31 percent year-on-year. In recent years, China has increased the production capacity and improved the quality of absorbent sanitary products, while the infant birth rate has decreased and the target consumer group has decreased, further reducing the demand for imported products.
In the import business of absorbent sanitary products, sanitary napkins (pads) and hemostatic plug are the only category to achieve growth, the import volume and import value increased by 8.91% and 7.24% respectively.
Exit , In the first three quarters of 2022, the export of absorbent sanitary products maintained the momentum of the same period last year, with the export volume increasing by 14.77% and the export volume increasing by 20.65%. Baby diapers accounted for the largest proportion in the export of sanitary products, accounting for 36.05% of the total export. The total export volume of absorbent sanitary products was much higher than the import volume, and the trade surplus continued to expand, demonstrating the growing production strength of China’s absorbent sanitary products industry.
Wet wipes
Import , The import and export trade of wet wipes is mainly export, the import volume is less than 1/10 of the export volume. In the first three quarters of 2022, the import volume of wipes decreased by 16.88% compared with the same period in 2021, mainly because the import volume of disinfection wipes decreased significantly compared with that of cleaning wipes, while the import volume of cleaning wipes increased significantly.
Exit , Compared with the first three quarters of 2021, the export volume of wet wipes decreased by 19.99%, which was also mainly affected by the decline of the export of disinfection wipes, and the demand for disinfection products in both domestic and foreign markets showed a declining trend. Despite the decline in the export of wipes, the volume and value of wipes are still significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

It should be noted that the wipes collected by the customs are divided into two categories: cleaning wipes and disinfecting wipes. Among them, the category coded “38089400″ contains disinfecting wipes and other disinfectant products, so the actual import and export data of disinfecting wipes is smaller than the statistical data of this category.
