Breaking the Cost Trap and Opening up a New Path for Sustainable Development of the Paper Industry

Recently, the Putney Paper Mill located in Vermont, USA is about to close. Putney Paper Mill is a long-standing local enterprise with an important position. The high energy costs of the factory make it difficult to maintain operation, and it was announced to close in January 2024, marking the end of the more than 200 year history of the paper industry in the region.
The closure of Putney Paper Mill reflects the challenges faced by the overseas paper industry, particularly the pressure of increased energy and raw material costs. This has also sounded an alarm for domestic paper enterprises. The editor believes that our paper industry needs:
1. Expand the channels of raw material sources and achieve diversified procurement. Utilizing imported rice milk to reduce costs and developing bamboo fiber
Alternative fiber raw materials such as vitamin and crop straw.
2. Improve the efficiency of raw material utilization and develop energy-saving papermaking processes and technologies. For example, increasing wood to wood pulp
The conversion rate, use of waste paper recycling technology, and so on.
3. Optimize production process management and reduce waste of raw materials. Utilizing digital means to optimize management and flow
Cheng, reduce management costs.

Enterprises should not be limited to traditional development concepts, but should innovate technology on the basis of tradition. We need to recognize that green environmental protection and digital intelligence are new directions for our technological innovation. In short, papermaking enterprises need to comprehensively respond to the changes and challenges of the internal and external environment. Only by adapting to the new normal and achieving transformation and upgrading can they stand invincible in market competition.
